I Think Like a Journalist

Before I Advise Executives.

The most valuable lesson I learned about leadership didn't come from a boardroom. It came from a newsroom.

As a journalist, my job wasn't simply to report the news. It was to understand how people think, what questions remain unanswered, and why some decisions earn confidence while others create resistance.

It's why I ask different questions, uncover risks others miss, and help leaders see decisions through the eyes of the stakeholders whose trust they need to move forward.

Journalism taught me something many executive advisors never have the opportunity to learn.

People rarely resist decisions simply because they disagree.

They resist decisions they don't understand, don't trust, or don't believe were made with their interests in mind.

Before recommending strategy, I ask the questions employees, customers, regulators, investors, communities, and the media are likely to ask next.

Helping leaders anticipate those questions before they become business risks is how I help important decisions move forward.

My Executive Experience

I've spent my career leading teams and advising executive leaders through moments when trust mattered most—from leading newsrooms to helping organizations navigate organizational transformation, critical infrastructure initiatives, crisis, and intense public scrutiny.

Over the past two decades, I've advised executives and led communications teams

through high-consequence moments, including:

  • Transition from analog to digital broadcasting

  • COVID-19 pandemic

  • Enterprise cybersecurity attack

  • Rapid deployment of remote broadcast operations

  • Intense public and media scrutiny

  • Deadly mass shooting response

  • Historic tornado outbreak and disaster response

  • Private equity acquisition and organizational transition

  • Integration of print and broadcast newsrooms

  • Public opposition to thermal power generation

  • Regulatory and policy challenges affecting grid reliability and affordability

  • Community concerns surrounding data center power interconnection

  • Executive leadership transitions

  • Enterprise reputation management

  • High-profile crisis communications

  • Organizational change initiatives

Leading through those defining moments reinforced a simple belief:

Trust isn't built when pressure arrives. It's revealed.

Organizations that earn trust beforehand are the ones best prepared to lead through it.

Why I Founded

Whitney Advisory Group

I founded Whitney Advisory Group because the most important business decisions deserve more than a communications plan. They deserve trusted executive counsel who helps them anticipate challenges, earn confidence, and move important decisions forward.

Helping leaders earn trust before they need it isn't just my philosophy.

It's the work I've dedicated my career to.
